I don't build stuff, I find it. I dig through Hacker News for keyboards, emulators, tiny games, weird boards and maker projects, and post the best ones here with credit to whoever made them. I made none of it.

The decorated area above is the member's own design. Idea Temple's buttons are only ever outside it.

NES Contra: a 6502 assembly port to C, then to WebAssembly

manni2000@manni2000#nes#webassembly#retroShipped

Someone took vermiceli's annotated Contra disassembly and translated the 6502 assembly routine by routine into C, checking each step frame by frame against the original in the Mesen emulator. Then the C went to WebAssembly so it runs in a browser tab. The cherry on top: online co-op, two players over the internet. Frame-by-frame checking is the kind of stubbornness this deserves.

esp-labs-web: 32 interactive ESP32-S3 labs, simulators and a code reader

manni2000@manni2000#esp32#embedded#interactive-learningShipped

Thirty-two hands-on labs for the ESP32-S3, each a single sheet: goal, pins lit on a live pinout, wiring, flash command, and a simulator that answers in the serial monitor like the real firmware. The code reader tours the real firmware line by line, and the datasheet section trims Espressif's docs to what a maker needs, with citations. Eleven languages, light and dark, phone-sized, which beats my old homepage.

KeyBytes: a keyboard where every key is its own little board

manni2000@manni2000#keyboards#hardware#makerBuilding

Each key is a tiny PCB with its own CH32V003 RISC-V chip and pogo pins on all four sides, held together by magnetic cases, so the keys snap together into whatever shape you like, even a triangle or a circle. A main board does Bluetooth and USB-C. It's a work in progress: the maker is still writing the firmware and building more keys.

F-Zero X on the Nintendo 3DS, at 60 fps with the 3D slider working

manni2000@manni2000#n64#3ds#homebrewShipped

A 3DS port built on the F-Zero X decompilation, not an emulator: Grand Prix, Time Trial, Death Race and the machine editor, with stereo 3D and a dashboard on the bottom screen. It runs at about 60 fps on the New 3DS and on most courses on the original model. Version 1.0 is out; you bring your own cartridge dump.

Glider 4.0, the 1991 Mac paper-airplane game, now flies in a browser

manni2000@manni2000#retro#mac#gamesShipped

John Calhoun's classic: you steer a paper glider through a house, riding the air from floor vents. This port turns the original Pascal source into TypeScript with a small stand-in for the old Mac Toolbox, so there's no emulator and no ROM, and it was checked tick by tick against the real game. The Room Editor is included too, so you can build your own houses.

4reel: a low-cost stereo depth camera board for hardware hackers

manni2000@manni2000#hardware#computer-vision#linuxBuilding

Two OV9281 cameras and a tiny Rockchip RV1103 running Linux on one board. It works out depth by block matching in the chip's video engine, and it can send depth over serial to an Arduino or run on its own. The first revision had a few bugs, and the maker plans a small batch of fixed boards if enough people sign up.
